Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about thermal drone surveys, inspections and how we work across Devon, Cornwall and the South West.

Land by Drone provides thermal drone surveys across Devon, Cornwall and the South West of England, including Plymouth, Exeter and Truro. We are based in Yelverton, Devon.

Surveys start from £195 including VAT and a full written report. The final price depends on the size of the property, its location and the type of survey. We provide a free, fixed quote before any work is booked.

No. The entire point of a drone inspection is that it requires no scaffolding, ladders or cherry pickers. The drone surveys your roof and building exterior safely from the air, with no disruption and no access equipment needed.

Reports are typically delivered within 24 to 48 hours of the survey, supplied as a full written report with annotated images and recommended actions.

Yes. Surveys are carried out by David Justin, an iRed-certified Level 1 Thermographer and Class 1 Chief Engineer with over 25 years of engineering experience. Land by Drone holds a CAA Operational Authorisation (PDRA01) and carries £10 million public liability insurance.

Thermal imaging reveals what the eye cannot: damp and moisture, heat loss, water ingress, missing insulation, draughts and mould risk. On solar farms it identifies hot spots, faulty cells and underperforming panels.

No. Surveys are non-invasive with no shutdown required. There is no drilling, no scaffolding and no need to halt operations.

Residential, commercial and industrial, from domestic homes to warehouses, factories, heritage buildings and solar farms.

A thermal building survey uses infrared imaging to reveal hidden problems like damp, heat loss and mould risk before they become expensive. It is useful for buyers, landlords, homeowners and anyone investigating an unexplained issue.

Yes. Thermal and high-resolution imaging pinpoints the source of water ingress, not just the symptom, so the right repair can be made first time.

A thermal camera flies the array and identifies underperforming panels, hot spots, bypass diode failures and string faults, without shutting the system down. Reports are delivered to IEC 62446-3 standards.

Yes. Land by Drone holds a CAA Operational Authorisation (PDRA01) for Specific category operations, which allows safe work in built-up areas, and a risk assessment is carried out before every flight.

A drone survey is faster, safer and cheaper. There are no scaffolding costs and no working-at-height risk, and you get high-resolution and thermal data that a ground inspection simply cannot capture.

Flat roof thermal surveys

Flat roof questions.

Yes. Thermal imaging shows where the insulation under the roof covering has become wet, which is usually the best clue to where the leak is and how far the water has spread.

Surveys start from £195 including VAT and the written report. The final price depends on the size of the roof, its location and access. We'll give you a free, fixed quote before any work is booked.

During the day, the sun heats the whole roof. After sunset, dry areas cool quickly, while wet areas hold their heat for longer. That temperature difference is what the thermal camera picks up, and it's strongest in the early evening.

Not straight away. Rain or standing water on the surface hides what's going on underneath. We wait for a dry, sunny day so the results are reliable.

No. The drone survey is completely non-invasive. We may recommend that your roofer takes a moisture reading or a small core sample to confirm a suspected wet area before repairs.

Often, yes. If the wet areas are limited, your roofer can repair just those sections. If the damage is widespread, the survey gives you the evidence to plan a replacement with confidence.

Reports are usually delivered within 24 to 48 hours of the survey.

Most insulated flat roofs, including felt, asphalt, EPDM rubber, single-ply and GRP fibreglass. Gravel-covered roofs and shiny metallic coatings are harder to survey, and we'll tell you at the quote stage if yours isn't suitable.
